About us
The PB and J Project (The Polar Bears and Justice Project) is one of Canada's oldest polar bear conservation organizations. We are dedicated to help maintain and restore the population of the polar bears and its habitat in the Arctic that has been endangered due to human activity such as climate change, industrial impacts and over hunting. Humans have caused climate change by releasing greenhouse gases caused by our carelessness in our ecological footprint and these changes in our world have caused the Arctic Sea ice, the habitat of the polar bears, to decrease at a faster rate every year. Industrial impacts in the Arctic such as oil drilling is putting the ecosystems of the Arctic in danger with the possibility of an oil spill or explosion at any time. More humans in the polar bears; habitat will increase the dangers for both humans and polar bears because the natural defense for both groups can severely injure or kill the other party. Over hunting has been an increasing concern for people all over especially in Canada because its' hunting quota has tripled in the last two years since Canada holds approximately half the world's polar bear population. PB and J is here to ensure that our future generations will be able to see polar bears in their natural habitats and not in zoos.
Our values
The PB and J's work is based on the highly regarded principles of accountability, respect, communication and teamwork. Our organization is one that people can rely on and know that they can know what we do all the time and know where there money is going. We value communication, teamwork and respect between every staff member and all the volunteers for our missions to be successful and effective. Our organization is committed to bringing productive campaigns to help threatened polar bears to restore it's population to its original state.
WHAT WE DO
Being Canada's oldest polar bear conservation organizations, we have experienced, witnessed and helped overcome many problems animals encounter in the wild whether it is caused by humans or is a natural change. Conserving the natural habitats of the world has become our goal and our never ending passion pushes us to work harder and safeguard the world's natural habitats.
addressing climate change
PB and J directly discusses with governments worldwide to push them to recognize the causes and effects of climate change on polar bears and encourages them to make realistic plans to help reduce climate change and its effects on the world. We try to not only have governments recognize the urgency of this matter but also everyone in each household to be aware that they are the cause of climate change and only with their help can we reduce its effects.
Monitoring populations
Our scientists monitor the weight, movement and health of the polar bears in the Arctic to ensure their safety and is a progress check of our missions and campaigns. We use polar bears to understand the impacts of all different threats, their changes and their adaptations to the changes of their habitats.
reducing industrial impacts
PB and J's goal is to minimize industrial impacts that are close to the polar bears' habitats and to ensure that all industrial developments in the Arctic are sustainable and will not damage the ecosystems and the wildlife populations. We hold meetings with companies who are about to expand in the Arctic industry and warn and educate them about the areas where the polar bears live and what they should do to ensure that their activities will not disrupt the polar bears in any way.
"Population models project that 4 of 13 sub-populations, which is 27% of Canada's 15 000 polar bears, have a high risk of declining by 30% or more over the next 36 years (3 bear generations)"
